BAKERSFIELD – Freshman first baseman Myleigh Cooper’s two-run homer in the top of the seventh placed the Cal Poly softball program in front during Friday afternoon’s series opener at Cal State Bakersfield as the Mustangs produced an 8-5 victory at Roadrunner Softball Complex.
With Cal Poly trailing Cal State Bakersfield heading into the seventh, 5-4, Mustang freshman designated player Karina Choi singled to lead off before reaching second through a throwing error from Roadrunners shortstop Alexia Castro. Sophomore catcher Maya Venegas followed with a game-tying double to right center field.
Cooper then launched her second career home run to right center, handing Cal Poly the 7-5 advantage. Another error by Castro later in the inning led to Cal Poly’s final run and eventual 8-5 margin of victory.
Taking over for Cal Poly starter Kaylee Davis with one down in the bottom half of the second and with the Mustangs trailing, 3-1, righthander Bree Brennan (6-6) conceded just two runs the remainder of the game while striking out three.
