Firefighters battled a blaze at San Francisco International Airport on Friday, an incident that didn’t affect flight operations but did trigger the closure of some roadways near the aviation hub.

San Francisco and San Mateo County fire crews were on the scene of a blaze that was burning Friday in five storage boxes in the cargo area of the airport, the San Francisco Fire Department reported on its X social media account.

The fire was in the vicinity of 575 through 600 North McDonnell Road, the San Francisco Fire Department stated.

“Fortunately, there are no associated injuries, and there is no threat to the immediate public,” the San Francisco fire agency said on its X account.

Fire crews also kept the blaze from expanding to nearby structures, according to the Fire Department.

The blaze didn’t affect SFO’s primary functions.

“There is no impact to flight operations, but our AirTrain Blue Line was temporarily suspended, as the track runs over the area in question,” said Doug Yakel, an airport spokesperson.

That AirTrain line serves the rental car center and long-term parking lots.

The fire affected streets in the vicinity.

“Roadways in the area closed due to smoke,” the San Francisco Fire Department stated.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation on Friday, fire officials reported.
