INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. & CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Oakland women’s tennis team dropped a close matchup to IU Indianapolis on Friday before responding with a dominant win over the Northern Kentucky Norse on Saturday.
AGAINST THE JAGUARS
Oakland (5-9, 1-1 HL) opened the weekend at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis, where the Golden Grizzlies came up just short against IU Indy (6-3, 2-0 HL). Senior Tara Montreuil and sophomore Martyna Piechowicz secured a 6-3 win on the No. 3 doubles court, but the Jaguars claimed the other two matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Four of the six singles matches went into extra sets, underscoring how tightly contested the matchup was between the two programs. Freshman Oliwia Klimas delivered a straight-sets victory on the No. 3 singles court, winning 6-2, 6-2. Piechowicz, playing on the No. 2 court, battled to a 7-6(6-0), 5-7, 6-4 victory, with every point proving critical. Sophomore Nisa Bulut took the No. 1 spot for the first time since the UC Irvine match and kept Oakland alive until the very end, ultimately falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-7(0-2).
At No. 4, junior Edie Hammond earned a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win. Junior Emilia Jarvinen battled back to force a third set at No. 5 but dropped a 5-7, 7-6(4-0), 3-6 decision. The result marks IU Indy’s first victory over Oakland in 10 seasons and moves the Jaguars to the top of the Horizon League women’s tennis standings.
AGAINST THE NORSE
The Golden Grizzlies (6-9, 2-1 HL) bounced back with a 5-2 win over Northern Kentucky (2-8, 0-2 HL) at the Five Seasons Sports Club. Montreuil and Piechowicz notched their second doubles victory of the weekend, winning 6-1 at No. 3. Joining them were Bulut and Klimas, who gutted out a 7-6(6-0) win to help secure the doubles point for Oakland.
In singles play, Hammond and Jarvinen cruised to straight-set wins, 6-1, 6-1, and 6-1, 6-2, respectively. Returning to the top of the lineup, Piechowicz recorded her first No. 1 singles win of the season, defeating Darya Gneidina 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Klimas came back from a set down to post a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory.
The 5-2 outcome trims Northern Kentucky’s all-time series lead over Oakland to 6-5 and extends the Golden Grizzlies’ win streak to two. The Norse sit at the bottom of the Horizon League women’s tennis standings at 0-2, alongside Cleveland State.
