One person is dead after a suspected DUI hit-and-run on Highway 1 in Monterey County on Saturday.The California Highway Patrol said officers responded around 12:45 a.m. to a crash on Highway 1 south of Springfield Road.CHP’s preliminary investigation found that a San Jose man was driving a BMW sedan north on Highway 1 south of Springfield Road when, for an unknown reason, he crossed into the southbound lane and crashed into a Ford SUV traveling southbound.The BMW was occupied by a 25-year-old male driver, a 24-year-old male passenger and another male passenger, all from San Jose. After the crash, the driver of the BMW and one passenger tried to run from the scene on foot.The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office used a drone and located the two suspects hiding near a pond in the area of Highway 1 and Struve Road. They were then detained.As a result of the crash, the driver of the Ford SUV, a Castroville man, was killed at the scene.CHP identified the victim as a 32-year-old man from Castroville. However, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division later identified the man as 22-year-old Bryan Ortiz of Castroville.The driver of the BMW and the 24-year-old passenger sustained major injuries, while the other male passenger suffered moderate injuries. All three were transported to a local hospital.The driver of the BMW was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, manslaughter and hit-and-run, according to CHP.Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call CHP at 831-796-2160.
