History

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Men’s Volleyball team wrapped their week with another win over CSUN, coming away 3-1 on Saturday after sweeping the Matadors on Thursday. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
The Gauchos had an auspicious start, going 9-0 for their best opening of the season. CSUN recovered and ended up just three points behind at 15-12 Gauchos. Santa Barbara kept their lead, however, and finished with a large lead budget at 25-19. 

The Matadors returned to win the second, taking it 25-17. CSUN reached their first tie at 1-1, but Santa Barbara buffered several points ahead at 11-6. CSUN came back for their second tie at 11-11. They found a high lead at 20-15, then forged ahead for a 25-18 win. 

The Gauchos took the third 25-18 for a 2-1 match lead. Santa Barbara held a significant buffer for much of the set and established multiple seven-point leads. George Bruening finished out the set with his tenth kill of the game. The Gauchos recorded 4.5 blocks as a team while Riggs Guy got back to back service aces. 

The fourth and final set was pushed into overtime, but the Gauchos triumphed 28-26. Santa Barbara had an early head start, but CSUN tied it at 9-9. Several more ties followed, but the Matadors threatened a 17-14 lead. Santa Barbara tied it again at 17-17 and the remainder of the set was a step-by-step battle. The Gauchos held on through a CSUN set point at 24-23 before closing the match with a kill from Bruening and an ace from Cole Schobel. 

Bruening delivered a stunning 17 kills and hit .452. Josh Aruya had seven block assists, while Guy led the team in digs with nine. Guy also reached double digit kills with ten.

The Gauchos play Long Beach twice, first playing away on Friday, April 10 before returning home for Senior Day on Saturday, April 11. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m.
