A student running on campus reported that the passenger of a passing car brandished a gun at him on South Drive of campus near Gilman Hall on Sunday evening.
The Daily Californian spoke with the student, who said somebody from the passenger side of an older silver Nissan sedan in a ski mask and sunglasses pointed what he believed to be a silver revolver at him at 10:19 p.m. The student says he was “80-95%” sure it was a gun. According to the WarnMe, “several subjects” were in the vehicle.
“I was like, ‘Oh s— … I should run, shouldn’t I,” the student said.
The student said he then fled down Oppenheimer Way and hid behind the Physics Building before calling the police. When the car circled back, he called the police yet again and UCPD arrived within a minute.
UCPD released a WarnMe at 11:19 p.m. Sunday alerting the public of the incident. The WarnMe classified the incident as an aggravated assault. The student said he was not physically harmed during the incident.
The WarnMe did not indicate that the report is linked to the potentially armed suspect that UCPD searched for in the Fire Trails earlier Sunday evening. It added that the subjects fled the area after the student reported the incident to UCPD.
“America, bro,” the student said when asked how he felt about the incident.
UCPD recommended that people use UC Berkeley’s free night safety services, including SafeWalk and the night safety shuttle, or travel in a group.
