OAKLAND — A man was charged with attempted murder and assault after police identified him as one of two people who shot a nightclub attendee five times in front of the business, court records show.

Kearee Captain, 21, of Hercules, was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, due to a prior weapons conviction in Contra Costa, court records show. Police allege that on Dec. 21, 2025, at around 3:25 a.m., Captain and another man shot a patron outside a club in the 1800 block of Telegraph Avenue in Oakland.

The victim told police that the two shooters seemed to have a problem with him, but he didn’t recognize them or know why, according to police. Captain was identified from a witness who recognized him from Instagram, and who later identified him from a photo lineup, authorities said.

Six days after the shooting, the vehicle that the shooters fled in was located in Jackson, Tennessee, being driven by a 20-year-old man who had a “large amount” of cash, authorities said in court filings. The second shooter has not been charged. Police say they found ammunition in a search of Captain’s Hercules home, and that he declined to provide a statement.

Captain has been released from jail after a judge set bail at $250,000, and he is set to enter a plea on April 9, court records show.
