After less-than-stellar starts to their seasons, both the San Diego State and USD baseball teams had three-game conference sweeps at home last week.

The Aztecs (18-15) took three straight from Air Force at Tony Gwynn Stadium to move into sole possession of first in the Mountain West standings.

First baseman Tyce Peterson was named the Mountain West Player of the Week and Max Farrell (San Marcos High School) was the conference’s freshman of the week. Peterson, a transfer from Oregon State, went 6-for-15 for the week with three home runs, five RBIs and two stolen bases. Farrell was 6-for-14 against the Air Force with a triple, a home run and seven RBIs.

USD swept a three-game series against Santa Clara at Fowler Park. Andrew Gauna was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for going 6-for-12 in the three games with two doubles, three home runs, eight RBIs and six runs scored.

More baseball

UC San Diego won two of three games against Hawaii. Shortstop Anthony Potestio went 7-for-15 in the series with three doubles, two steals, four RBIs and three runs scored.

• Point Loma Nazarene (32-7, 28-4) scored a four-game sweep at Hawaii-Hilo. Both Vaughn Neckar (8-1 on the season) and Devin Norton (5-1) had one-hit shutout starts in Hawaii. The Sea Lions are now ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II West region.

• Cal State San Marcos fell to 22-9 after splitting a four-game series with Cal State Dominguez Hills.

• Palomar College (26-4, 15-1) retains a four-game lead on Grossmont College (19-12, 11-5) in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.

Softball

North County neighbors Cal State San Marcos (36-3, 18-2) and Palomar College (28-1, 11-0) continue to roll. The Cougars, who are ranked No. 2 in the nation in NCAA Division II, have won 12 straight games and lead the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings by three games.  Palomar has won 16 straight games and leads San Diego Mesa by three games in the PCAC.

• San Diego State (20-17) lost two of three games to Utah State at home. USD (16-19) took two of three games from Loyola Marymount. And UC San Diego (14-22) won two of three games at UC Riverside.

Men’s track and field

Host UC San Diego’s Miles Bennett won the high jump (7-feet, ¼-inch) and teammate Peter Gibbs was second (6-feet, 8 ¾-inches) in the high jump at the 33rd Tritons Invitational Saturday.

Freshman Juleus Lewis of Mesa College won the long jump at 23-6 ¾ inches with UCSD’s Andre Jones third at 23-3 ¼. Teams from San Diego Mesa College finished second (40.60) and fourth (41.65) in the 4×100 relay; the Olympians also finished second (3:10.54) in the 4×400 relay.

• CSUSM’s Jason Wells tied his own school record of 21.01 seconds while finishing third in the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto. He also finished fourth in the 100 (10.53). The 400-meter relay team of Logan Wilson, Wells, Adam Moe and Solomon German posted the third-fastest time (:40.70) in program history.

Women’s track and field

San Diego State won four events during the women’s part of the Tritons Invitational.

Aji Mbye won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.59 seconds and finished second in the 200 (:23.46). Shari Hurdman (:53.04), Laraigh Allen (:53.79) and Kelia Bentham (:53.94) ran 1-2-3 in the 400. Bentham finished third in the 200 (23.67) and Hurdman was fourth (:23.76).

Aztec Jada Pierre won the 100 hurdles (:13.15). Xiamara Young won the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, six inches. UCSD’s Tamara Aimufia finished second in the elite long jump (19-9 ½).

• The host Tritons won two events. UCSD’s Sylvana Northrop won the 5,000 meters (16:15.69) and finished second in the 1,500 (4:20.69). UCSD’s Allyson Abandonato ran second in the 800 (2:06.81). Makena Bailey won the high jump at 5-8 with Triton teammate Isabella Rivera third (5-6).

• UCSD’s Emma Dunmire (10:33.05) was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with Aztec Samantha Wood (10:50.30) was third.

• San Diego State’s Isabella Nilsen (13-9 ¾) and Sydney Ash (13-1 3/4) were second and third in the elite pole vault.

•Two CSUSM school records fell Saturday in Bay Area meets. Liberty Miller broke the school record with a 4:57.25 mile during the Mike Fanelli Track Classic at San Francisco State. She also ran the fourth-fastest 5,000 (16:42.31) in Cougars’ history. Danna Ibarra recorded the third-fastest mile in CSUSM history at 5:08.28 in the same meet. Jordyn Brooks broke her own school record in the triple jump with a mark of 39 feet 4.4 inches.

Nadia Miechowicz, who was named the CCAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Week last week, ran the third-fastest 400 (56.09) in CSUSM history, then placed fourth in the 200 (24.07) at the Stanford Invitational. And Danielle Patrick won the pole vault with the second-best mark in school history (12 feet, 6 inches).

Women’s water polo

Mimi Stoupas scored three goals as 17th-ranked San Diego State defeated 16th-ranked UC San Diego 10-8 to end a 10-year losing streak in the 24th crosstown Harper Cup match at the Aztec Aquaplex. The Aztecs still lead the series 14-10 despite the losing streak. Earlier, the Aztecs defeated 23rd-ranked Brown 12-5.

Men’s tennis

USD (16-4) defeated Saint Mary’s 4-0 to give Toreros head coach Ryan Keckley his 200th career win.

Women’s golf

San Diego State’s Kylie Phi was named the Mountain West Golfer of the Week for finishing seventh in the Silicon Valley Showcase. The Aztecs finished seventh in the team scoring.
