Five days after he was stabbed in downtown Long Beach, a South Gate man died of his injuries, Long Beach police said.
James Plummer, 72, of South Gate, was stabbed around 5 a.m. on April 1 in the 400 block of North Pacific Avenue, authorities said. The suspect fled before police arrived.
The next day, police arrested Cary Odell Singletary, 66, in the 1000 block of North Pacific Avenue, Long Beach police said.
Singletary was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Plummer died on Monday, April 6, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office now will consider filing murder charges.
The case remains under investigation, police said, and no motive has been announced. Investigators do not believe the two men knew each other.
Police ask anyone with information about the case to contact homicide detectives Eric Thai and Chasen Contreras at 562-570-7244.
