The San Francisco Giants had the worst record (3-8) and run differential (minus-27) in the National League heading into Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. 

The lineup was due for a shakeup. 

Jared Oliva will make his first regular season start, in center field, since 2021 when he was with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His last start was also against the Philadelphia Phillies. Jerar Encarnacion will start in right field and Casey Schmitt at designated hitter against a tough lefty in Cristopher Sanchez. 

The Sanchez matchup allows Bailey, who hits best from the left side, a day off. Daniel Susac will get his second big league start behind the plate, catching Robbie Ray again. Susac reached base four times with three hits and a walk in his first big league start against the New York Mets.

All three players out of the lineup are available off the bench, Vitello said. The Giants have used six different lineups this season, with Bader and Lee having started the first 11 games. 

“All of our guys still feel fresh, still feel good,” Vitello said. “Everyone’s a little frustrated. At times, we haven’t played as well together as a group, or there’s been blips where guys individually haven’t done as well as they want to at this point.”

The Giants lost leads in their last two games, but the offense’s inability to hit good pitching, particularly fastballs, is the emerging trend from their eight losses. The frontline hitters have been trying too hard, Vitello said, to step up and settle nerves.

One of those guys is Rafael Devers, a career top-of-the-order guy batting fifth in the lineup on Tuesday. He’s batting .190 with two extra-base hits, including a home run, having started all 11 games.

“He’s just kind of jumping at the ball a little bit more than normal,” Vitello said. “You’ve seen him get jammed. At times it’s been on pitches well off the plate — (Tim) Hill comes to mind, from the Yankees.

“He wants to hit the ball a long way because he’s capable of doing it and he’s eager to do better than he has. Wants to do well for the team, too, so you get the overzealousness out of all our guys. There’s a couple different ways you can do it, go forward or away from the ball. More than anything, his body is almost drowned out by his hands, if that makes sense.”
