FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (FOX26) — What started as a strange noise turned into a rescue mission at a sheriff’s substation in Selma.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office says Detective Andres Solis was working at the Area 3 substation when he heard what sounded like meowing coming from the ceiling.

After investigating the attic crawl space, he discovered five kittens hidden inside.

Solis was able to safely remove the kittens but later heard another faint cry.

One kitten was still stuck even deeper in a hole.

Solis was eventually able to get the small cat out safely.

He then called Fresno Humane Animal Services.

Officials say the kittens were extremely hungry but are now being nursed back to health.

Sadly, the mother cat was later found deceased.

Once the kittens are healthy, they will be available for adoption.
