Golden Gate Bridge truck fire snarls traffic into S.F.

A big rig caught fire on the Golden Gate Bridge on Wednesday morning, snarling traffic into San Francisco and forcing the closure of right lanes on U.S. 101 southbound, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fire was reported just south of the bridge near the toll plaza, CHP Marin said in a social media post.

“US-101 Southbound, south of the Golden Gate Bridge, the far right lanes are closed due to a truck that had caught fire,” the agency said.

Drivers and transit riders reported heavy backups as crews responded. Golden Gate Transit passengers were told buses could not stop at the toll plaza because of the fire.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, whether anyone was injured, or how long the lane closures would remain in place.

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the Bay Area’s busiest commute corridors, and even minor disruptions can quickly lead to significant delays for drivers heading into San Francisco from Marin County.
