Agreement made with La Familia Counseling Center will expand the community services offered at Maple Neighborhood Center

Sacramento, CA – The SCUSD Board of Education approved the sale of the Maple Elementary School site to La Familia Counseling Center for $300,000 dollars at their February 5 meeting. The deal for the Maple Elementary property has now closed escrow. This sale will allow La Familia Counseling Center to take ownership of the property housing their operations in the facility currently known as the Maple Neighborhood Center.

On Friday, April 10 at 2:00 P.M., SCUSD and La Familia Counseling Center will host a press conference to share how this deal will positively impact families in the South City Farms neighborhood and the greater Sacramento area at the Maple Neighborhood Center (3301 37th Ave, Sacramento). La Familia will also announce details on the impact the acquisition of this property will have on their operations, including services expansion, facility upgrades, and creation of a new park space for the community.

Maple Elementary School was closed by the district during the campus reductions of 2013. In 2015, the Board approved a memorandum of understanding with community groups to provide services at two of the closed school sites, including the Maple Neighborhood Center by La Familia Counseling Center at Maple Elementary. La Familia has operated various services at the site for almost 11 years and this sale would allow La Familia Counseling Center to take ownership of the property housing their operations in the facility currently known as the Maple Neighborhood Center.

“The Sacramento City Unified Board is incredibly proud of our partnership with La Familia Counseling Center,” said Tara Jeane, president, SCUSD Board of Education. “It was important to our Board that the old Maple Elementary property be repurposed in a way that benefits our students and the entire community. We look forward to seeing La Familia expand upon the wonderful work they do in support of Sacramento families.”

“We are deeply grateful to Sacramento City Unified School District for their partnership and shared vision,” said Rachel Rios, Executive Director of La Familia Counseling Center. “This transition ensures the campus will remain a place of opportunity for children and families for generations to come.”

La Familia Counseling Center’s mission is to improve the quality of life for at-risk youth and families of diverse backgrounds by offering multicultural counseling, support and outreach services and programs to help families to overcome adversity, to become empowered, and to succeed in their lives.

The Maple Elementary site went through the 7-11 committee process, which advises the Board of Education on the reuse, repurposing and disposition of District properties not needed for school purposes. The SCUSD 7-11 Committee proceedings and deliberations were open to the public.
