An Easter egg hunt in Long Beach turned grim when a family discovered a human skull at a park.

LONG BEACH, Calif. — An Easter egg hunt in Long Beach, California, led to the discovery of a partially buried human skull on Sunday, reports say.

Local news station ABC7‘s helicopter captured footage of colorful eggs surrounding what appears to be a skull embedded in the dirt.

The family egg hunt took place at a park on Easter Sunday.

“It’s pretty tragic, it’s a day you want to spend with family. You don’t expect something like this. You expect to have a wholesome time,” said Mark Zaldana.

He was at the park and spotted the family moments after they found the skull, saying they were “freaking out a little bit.”

The Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed they “recovered a skeletonized human skull and mandible and brought the recovered remains to the Forensic Science Center for further examination” from the park.

They are investigating the cause of death and the identity of the skull.

Christopher and Crista Cain live nearby and say they’re shocked by the news.

“We’re devastated. We love this neighborhood and to think this could happen to a little child,” Crista Cain said.

No other information about the skull is available at this time.
