Oakland Zoo said that the condition of a rescued mountain lion kitten has been improving with care by staff.

This footage shows the orphaned kitten, named Crimson, playing with a dinosaur toy which helps him “learn to stalk, pounce, and play – all behaviors we want to see in a developing young puma.”

Crimson was first rescued by the National Park Service before being brought to Los Angeles Zoo, where he underwent a health check, had multiple daily bottle feeds, and was kept in quarantine with minimal human contact, the zoo said.

To continue his rehabilitation, Crimson was then moved to Oakland Zoo where he has been receiving bottle feeds every three hours and socializing with other mountain lions.

Mountain lions need 12-18 months with their mother to learn essential survival skills, Oakland Zoo said. Due to Crimson’s age, he lacks the skills necessary to survive in the wild. Credit: Oakland Zoo via Storyful
