A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of DUI following a fatal crash on Clovis Avenue in Fresno County, though it’s not considered the primary factor in the collision, California Highway Patrol said.

In a news release sent Wednesday, CHP said the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 3 when a Ford Expedition traveling north on Clovis entered the North Avenue intersection “against a red signal.”

It collided with a Mercedes-Benz CLA250 that had been heading west and sustained “significant damage” as it came to rest in the center divider.

A passenger in the Expedition died at the scene despite life-saving measures, CHP said.

She was identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Ana Salcedo Jimenez, 44, of Fresno.

The driver of the Expedition had “moderate injuries and was transported for medical treatment,” the statement said.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested, according to the CHP.

It is unclear if he was injured in the crash, or booked into county jail, but following a preliminary investigation the driver of the Ford was believed “to be the primary collision factor,” the CHP said, “for failing to stop at a red traffic signal.”

The crash remains under investigation.
