BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A bicyclist is dead after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run on Weedpatch Highway Sunday night.

According to the California Highway Patrol, just before 9:45 p.m., a bicyclist had been reported to be struck by a vehicle on Weedpatch Highway, otherwise known as State Route 184 north of Muller Road.

The bicyclist was reported to be travelling north on Weedpatch Highway when a vehicle approached the rear end of the bike, also travelling northbound. The driver then struck the bicyclist, the bicyclist landing in the east dirt shoulder of Weedpatch Highway, CHP said.

The driver fled the scene immediately after, according to CHP.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unknown if speed, drugs and or alcohol are contributing factors to the crash.
