A problem with BART’s equipment Thursday caused long system-wide delays and forced commuters to the San Francisco International Airport to seek other options after the agency lost service between it’s South San Francisco station and the airport.

BART resumed its full service on the system about about 11:20 a.m. after correcting equipment having to do with train control. The issue caused major delays on the system for most of the morning. BART first announced the problem and a 10-minute delay at 8:23 a.m. and issued an advisory about 20 minutes after that.

Residual delays remained into the afternoon.

All 50 stations remained open during the time the equipment was down. BART limited service on the Red Line and Yellow Line. The Yellow Line runs from Antioch to the San Francisco Airport and Red Line trains travel from Richmond to Millbrae.

The trains on those two lines were turned around at the Colma station. There are normally four stops — South San Francisco, San Bruno, SFO and Millbrae — for Red Line trains after that station.

Riders on the other lines were forced to make train transfers they normally would not have had to make.

Individual trains made loops between the SFO and Millbrae stations, and another train looped between Colma and San Bruno, Robertson said.

San Mateo County buses honored BART fares between SFO and South San Francisco.
