RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UT Arlington Mavericks dropped the opening game of their Western Athletic Conference series to California Baptist 9-1 on Friday night at James W. Totman Stadium.
UTA (13-19, 2-2 WAC) trailed 2-0 after the first inning as California Baptist’s Connor Ross delivered a two-run double to give the Lancers an early advantage. CBU added two more runs in the second inning and four in the fourth to build a commanding lead.
The Mavericks broke through in the seventh inning when Alex Bustamante drove in Austin Phillips with a sacrifice fly to center field, but UTA was unable to generate additional offense against the Lancer pitching staff. California Baptist added a run in the eighth inning to account for the final margin.
Noah Fields and Hank Harp each recorded a hit for the Mavericks, who were limited to eight hits on the evening. California Baptist finished with 11 hits.
Pitching Profile
Junior Caylon Dygert took the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings. Graduate right-hander Nick Perry worked 4.2 innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits.
