At a time when many readers are increasingly turning to digital devices, independent bookstore Skylight Books in Los Feliz Saturday announced plans to expand its brick-and-mortar presence with a second location in Eagle Rock.
The new store is expected to open in the fall, according to a social media post by the business on Friday.
“We just signed a lease on this lovely space at 1958 Colorado Blvd.,” the post read. “It’s nearly 6,000 square feet and will have room for a cafe! Don’t worry — we’re not leaving Los Feliz. This location will be in addition to our current home, where we’ll be celebrating 30 years this fall.”
The existing Los Feliz store at 1818 N. Vermont Ave. is known for its author events and curated selection. Its nearby Arts Annex, which focuses on film, music, photography and graphic novels, will also remain open.
General Manager Mary Williams said the expansion has drawn a strong response.
“We’re so excited to be expanding to Eagle Rock. The response since we announced this morning has been overwhelming in the best way — we can’t wait to open and meet our new community,” Williams told the Pasadena Star-News. “It’s a great neighborhood — like in Los Feliz, there are a lot of independent shops and restaurants already there, so we know the locals support and value their small businesses.”
Williams said the new location will offer a similar mix of literary fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels and arts titles, with an expanded children’s section to serve families in the area.
The announcement comes as another Eagle Rock bookstore, READ Books, is preparing to leave its longtime location following a proposed rent increase. The owners said they are now seeking a new location.
