Today’s Big Stories

1. LAX to tear down, reconstruct Terminal 5 starting Tuesday, ahead of 2028 Olympics

Terminal 5 at Los Angeles International Airport will be officially shuttered Tuesday in preparation for demolition as part of a project aimed at revitalizing the facility ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Last week, Los Angeles World Airports announced its plans, noting three airlines will move out of Terminal 5. JetBlue was the first to leave and relocate to Terminal 1, followed by Spirit Airlines to Terminal 2 and American Airlines is set to make Terminal 4 its temporary home.

After American Airlines shifts its operations to Terminal 4 on Tuesday, Terminal 5 will be completely closed to begin demolition efforts.

Los Angeles World Airports oversees the city’s airports — LAX and the Van Nuys Airport.

“As we take this important step toward transforming LAX, the closure of Terminal 5 marks a pivotal moment in our journey to deliver a world-class airport experience,” Doug Webster, Chief Airport Operations and Maintenance Officer for Los Angeles World Airports, said in a statement. “Our goal is to minimize disruption during this transition, and we are working closely with our airline partners to ensure continued operations and smooth travel for our passengers.”

2. Fireworks removed from East LA home, prompting school evacuations

A cache of fireworks was seized from a home in East Los Angeles Monday, prompting precautionary evacuations of two nearby schools.

Agents with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives served a search warrant about 8 a.m. at the home directly across the street from Garfield High School at 5101 E. Sixth St. Video from the scene showed boxes of fireworks being removed from the home in the 400 block of South Vancouver Avenue.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported its deputies were assisting an outside agency with an investigation linked to Yolo County, and later reported that it was assisting as the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office and ATF agents conducted the investigation.

The state Fire Marshal was also involved.

“ATF assisted our state and local counterparts today near Garfield High School,” according to Nicole Lozano, public information officer for the ATF’s Los Angeles field office. “ATF is committed to ensure our community stays safe and protected from individuals that may unlawfully possess or manufacturing of fireworks and explosive materials.’

3. Ex-wife of Angels employee says she saw players party with pills during trial over pitcher’s death

The ex-wife of a Los Angeles Angels employee at the center of the overdose death of one of its star pitchers testified in a civil trial Monday that she saw players and clubhouse attendants passing pills and alcohol while partying on the team plane.

Camela Kay told jurors in a Southern California courtroom she had traveled on the Angels team plane with her then-husband Eric Kay, who was convicted of providing drugs that led to the 2019 death of Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, and seen players partying, playing card games, gambling and drinking.

“They’re treated like kings,” Camela Kay said of her observations on the plane. “I had seen them passing out pills or drinking alcohol excessively.”

The testimony came in a trial for a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by Skaggs’ family contending the Angels should be held responsible for letting a drug-addicted and dealing team communications director stay on the job and access its players. The Angels have said team officials did not know Skaggs was taking drugs and that any drug activity involving him and Kay happened on their own time and in the privacy of the player’s hotel room.

4. Dodgers’ Mookie Betts wins Roberto Clemente Award for humanitarian work

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts has won the Roberto Clemente Award for his humanitarian work.

He will receive the award before Game 3 of the World Series at Dodger Stadium on Monday night.

He was the Dodgers’ nominee for the yearly honor that goes to a Major League player who represents the sport through character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions on and off the field.

The former AL MVP and eight-time All-Star founded the 5050 Foundation in 2021 to help underserved youth with their mental and emotional health, nutrition, financial literacy and physical fitness.

Betts donated over $30,000 in Nike apparel to victims of the deadly Los Angeles wildfires in January. He and his foundation helped a family whose Altadena home was destroyed in the Eaton Fire with financial assistance and recovery resources.
