RENO, Nev. –  Jake McCoy hit a three-run home run and five different Spartans had multiple RBIs to lead the San José State baseball team (14-20, 5-6 MW) in a 12-6 victory over Nevada (18-13, 7-4 MW) Saturday afternoon from Don Weir Field at Peccole Park in the second game of a three game series.

The Spartans set the tone in the second inning with a big rally. San José State strung together hits up and down the lineup, highlighted by RBI singles from Matteo Mendoza, Peyton Rowles and JC Osorio-Agard. A hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and continued two-out hitting helped the Spartans plate six runs in the frame. In the fifth inning, McCoy delivered the biggest swing of the day, launching a three-run home run to extend the Spartans’ advantage to 9-0

On the mound, Jesse Gutierrez started the game and went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Landon Marchetti (1-0) earned the win in relief, striking out three and allowing two runs across two innings. Kyle Calzadiaz closed out the game, striking out four in the final 2.2 innings of the game.

Nevada responded with runs in the middle innings, including three runs in the fifth and a run in both the sixth and seventh that briefly cut the Wolfpack deficit to five. However, San José State answered, adding insurance runs in the later innings, including a two-run eighth from an Alan Ramirez two RBI single that helped put the game out of reach.

In total, San José State finished with 12 runs on 15 hits.. Nevada tallied 14 hits of its own, but left 10 on base and struck out eight times.
