(Inside California Politics) — The race to be the next governor of California is “wide open,” San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan says.

The mayor spoke with Inside California Politics host Nikki Laurenzo this week and made the case for his campaign, which is lagging behind in the polls with less than two months to go before the election.

Other Democratic candidates are offering “more of the same,” Mahan said.

“Sacramento has been failing us, frankly, and I jumped in the race to offer an alternative,” he said.

He also criticized them for focusing too much on revenue growth — something he believes is code for tax increases.

“It’s not how much we spend, it’s how well we spend it,” Mahan said.

Mahan said his top Democratic opponents are “household names.” He believes that when voters learn his record and his focus on government accountability, his poll numbers will rise.
