SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — There is a newborn “cheeky” monkey in the Lost Forest area at the San Diego Zoo and the public can now see the baby.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance announced this week a baby Schmidt’s red-tailed guenon was born to first-time parents Janga, 5, and Jack, 6.

Guenon’s are unique because of their large “chonkey” cheek pouches where they store extra food, sometimes as much as their stomachs can hold.

“Guenon” comes from the French word for monkey. The species is native to Africa and is classified as “some endangered.”

After bonding with its parents, the baby monkey can now be seen by the public at their Ituri Forest habitat on Hippo Trail at the San Diego Zoo.

Guenon’s typically live to about 16 years old.

The San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Watch some of the animals at the zoo 24/7 from the wildlife live cameras.
