Oregon didn’t have to scrounge up game film of San Diego State forward Pharaoh Compton. It just had to look at its own.
Compton committed to the Ducks on Sunday night, where he’ll join Boise State transfer Andew Meadow as coach Dana Altman tries to rebuild a program that slipped to 12-20 last season and out of the Kenpom top 100.
The Ducks know SDSU’s long, athletic forward well. Compton played against them in each of his two seasons, combining to make 7 of 8 shots while collecting five rebounds and three steals. Both games were at the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas, a 78-68 Ducks win in 2024 and a 97-80 Aztecs win last fall.
Compton appeared in 63 games for SDSU, starting just one and averaging 6.5 points and 2.8 rebounds in a mere 13.6 minutes. He was constantly limited by foul trouble, averaging 7.2 per 40 minutes. Eighteen times, he had four or more fouls in a game.
He becomes the second of six Aztecs in the transfer portal to find new homes. Last week, Miles Byrd committed to Providence of the Big East.
BJ Davis, Magoon Gwath, Miles Heide and Taj DeGourville have yet to announce new destinations.

USD adds Stromer
With most of last season’s roster in the transfer portal, new USD men’s basketball coach JR Blount has plenty of spots to fill. He added one piece Sunday with a commitment from 6-foot-6 senior wing Dusty Stromer, who spent last season at Grand Canyon and the prior two at Gonzaga.
Stromer was a four-star recruit out of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High School, ranked in ESPN’s top 50 prep prospects from the class of 2023, and picked Gonzaga over UCLA. He started 15 times for Zags as a true freshman but never quite found a role, averaging 4.6 points per game and shooting 35.1% shooting beyond the arc in two seasons.
He transferred to Grand Canyon and largely came off the bench last season, averaging 6.4 points with 33.3% 3-point shooting in 22.6 minutes per game.
Stromer is the second transfer addition to Blount’s roster. On Wednesday, the Toreros landed Antonio Munoz, a 6-6 forward from Chicago who averaged 12.5 points per game as a freshman at Grambling State last season.
Sea Lions star to Hawaii
Jaden Matingou, a 6-3 guard who was a first-team all-conference selection at Point Loma Nazarene, is leaving the Sean Lions and transferring to Hawaii. Matingou told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that he chose the Rainbow Warriors over offers from Oregon State and Colorado State.
A St. Augustine High School graduate, Matingou averaged 11.9 points and 4.2 assists per game last season at PLNU. He has one year of eligibility remainingg.
Gray plays in NBA
Santa Fe Christian High Hayden Gray became the first UCSD alum to appear in an NBA game, getting 25 minutes for the Utah Jazz on Sunday night in an 131-107 loss against the Lakers in Los Angeles. Wearing No. 33, the 6-4 Gray finished with six points, one assist, one steal and one block.
Gray played with the Boston Celtics in the NBA Summer League last July, then joined their G League affiliate in Maine. On Saturday, he signed a two-year contract with the Jazz in time to appear in the NBA club’s regular-season finale.
Gray is known for his defense, breaking the Maine Celtics’ single-season steals record with 79. He was the Division I leader in steals in his senior season at UCSD, averaging 3.1 per game, and named Big West defensive player of the year.
