FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Grief has turned into action in the Valley following a hit-and-run that killed a Fresno mother and her young son after they were struck by a driver who ran a red light and ended up in the Dry Creek Canal.
On Monday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Taqueria El Premio Mayor will host a food truck fundraiser in which 100% of the proceeds will go to the Hernandez family.

In the days since, neighbors have organized memorials and GoFundMe donations to support the family.

Flowers were piled at what had been Hernandez’s nail salon station, on April 7, as the room packed with people sharing stories about Hernandez, known to those close to her as “Patty,” and her son (PHOTOJOURNALIST CHASE GAUTHIER).
Taqueria El Premio Mayo is typically closed on Mondays, but the owners said they made an exception for the fundraiser.

“It’s tragic when anything like that happens and since we’re part of the community, it was kind of our need to like help out the family,” Jesus Orozco, an employee, said.
The taqueria’s owners said on social media that the loss has deeply impacted the community in ways they can’t fully put into words and that the loss is truly unimaginable.
The food truck will be on 3110 E. McKinley Avenue in Fresno.
The driver accused in the hit-and-run surrendered to officials the day after the crash.

He was identified as 22-year-old Timothy Seth Chavez and faces multiple counts of gross vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run.

He is also charged with driving on a suspended license and driving without insurance.
