Re “San Diego homeowners never got trash service for ‘free’” (April 8): This letter misstates that the city is double taxing residents for trash hauling without a corresponding reduction in property taxes. Property taxes are collected by the county, with a portion flowing to cities within it. San Diego, much like every other city in the county, receives some of that revenue and also charges separately for trash hauling. Condo dwellers who are also property taxpayers within the city have historically paid private haulers for their trash pick-up and have never enjoyed free trash hauling by the city. Any assertion that city single-family homeowners are being double taxed would be incorrect.
