After the Los Angeles Unified School District reached a tentative agreement with the unions that represent teachers and school administrators, the district continued negotiating with education workers’ union to keep campuses open for hundreds of thousands of students.

But the tentative agreements are still not a done deal, and parents and guardians said they cannot afford to sit back and be unprepared if the talks between the LAUSD and the unions fall through.

If the district is unable to reach final agreements — forcing schools to close — resources are available for students and families.

Student lessons

In case the campus are closed, the LAUSD will post instructional resources for each grade on its website.

The lesson plans include slide decks and printable packets for each subject, including English, match, science, social studies and arts.

For those who need help with their lessons, online tutoring is available through the LA Public Library,  Tutor.com and Step Up Tutoring.

Free meals

The LAUSD serves approximately 530,000 meals daily to its roughly 400,000 students.

With more than 80% of its students live at or below the poverty line, school meals are their primary source of daily nutrition. The closures of campuses would deprive them of healthy meals.

When schools are closed, there are some food distribution sites for students to pick up grab-and-go meals. Grab-and-go meals will be available from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. while supplies last, according to the LAUSD.

In case the campus are closed, LA County’s Department of Parks and Recreation also offers free snack program for children and youth ages 0 to 18 at participating parks.

The county said about 50 sites will provide meals from 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on weekdays through May 22, 2026.

Child care

The district said child supervision services for children ages 5 to 17 will be offered based on availability.

But students with moderate-to-severe health issues or children under the age of 4 cannot be accommodated, the district said.
