The 49ers remain as talented as any team in the NFL. But as they head into 2026, their most decorated players are in their 30s, are coming off major injuries or both. Despite missing stars like Nick Bosa, George Kittle, Brock Purdy, Fred Warner and Brandon Aiyuk for chunks of the 2025 season, the 49ers won 12 games and beat the Philadelphia Eagles on the road in the playoffs. That gives them hope that with better injury luck, they can push deeper into the playoffs. A concern: A team that must get younger hasn’t drafted a truly impactful player since Purdy in 2022.

Scouting the decision-makers

The 49ers are coach-forward drafters in that Lynch and his staff strive to get the coaches’ views on prospects and their potential fits in the later winter and spring. A former wide receiver, Shanahan takes the lead on that position, running back and quarterback.

49ers’ key positions of need

Edge rusher: The 49ers’ 20 sacks in 2025 wasn’t just a league low, they were the fewest they’ve ever recorded in a non-strike-shortened season since sacks became an official statistic. Meanwhile, defensive ends Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams are coming off ACL injuries while the team’s 2025 sack leader, Bryce Huff (with four), decided to retire.

Wide receiver: Evans’ and Kirk’s additions help, but neither may be in San Francisco long term and the rest of the team’s receiver talent is unproven. For example, Demarcus Robinson is the only returning 49ers receiver who scored a touchdown last season. He scored one, in Week 16.

Offensive tackle: There’s a reason the 49ers routinely get bullied by Trent Williams in contract negotiations: They have no Plan B at left tackle. Though it’s hard to see a rookie taking over Williams’ spot in 2026, it would make sense to begin developing a player at that spot. The last tackle they drafted? Jaylon Moore in the fifth round in 2021.
