An Amber Alert was issued overnight after a 3-year-old boy was abducted during a carjacking in Los Angeles.

The California Highway Patrol activated the Amber Alert on behalf of the Los Angeles Police Department after 3-year-old Messiah Evans was taken while sitting inside an SUV in the Harvard Park neighborhood Monday night.

A woman told officers she was inside her vehicle near West 66th Street and Normandie Avenue around 10:30 p.m. when her ex-boyfriend, identified as 38-year-old Joshua Pendleton, approached and forced his way into the SUV from the driver’s side, an LAPD spokesperson confirmed to KTLA.

The woman exited the vehicle from the passenger side as Pendleton drove off with the child still inside. Police said it was unclear whether Pendleton knew the boy was in the car at the time.

The SUV was described as a white 2006 Saturn Vue with California license plate 5SHE918.
