FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — A man is facing a murder charge after prosecutors say he ran a red light at high speed just after midnight and caused a crash that killed one person and left another critically injured.
Criminal charges have been filed against 32-year-old Joseph Douglas Gray in connection with a deadly crash on Friday.
Prosecutors say that Gray was driving a Dodge Charger eastbound on Dakota Avenue approaching Chestnut Avenue just after midnight when, according to multiple witnesses, he ran a red light at a high rate of speed and crashed into a Chevy Cruze traveling southbound on Chestnut Avenue.
The impact ejected the driver of the Chevy, and both the driver and passenger were taken to Community Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
Despite life-saving measures, the driver was pronounced dead, and the passenger remains in critical condition.
Preliminary results indicate Gray was driving with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 0.13%.
His vehicle was also reported to smell of marijuana.
Three puppies were found inside Gray’s vehicle, and one was confirmed to have suffered major injuries.
Gary faces multiple charges, including murder, DUI, and animal cruelty.
Prosecutors further allege Gray has a prior conviction for driving under the influence as recently as Dec. 5, 2025, in Los Angeles County, along with two additional prior felony convictions.
In addition, Gray was arrested twice in Fresno County for DUI, first on Sept. 13, 2024, and again on Dec. 5, 2025, the same day he was placed on probation in Los Angeles County.
Both cases were previously filed by the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office, but prosecutors say Gray failed to appear in court.
He was on probation for DUI at the time of the crash, according to the allegations.
If convicted of all charges and allegations, Gray faces a sentence of 8 years and 8 months in state prison, followed by an additional term of 15 years to life.
