(FOX40.COM) — Detectives with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Gang Suppression Unit arrested a 36-year-old man in the Arden area Wednesday.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said this comes after finding a firearm, narcotics and a large amount of cash during a vehicle search. The suspect, identified as Luis Garay, is a known probationer and validated gang member.
According to the sheriff’s office, detectives conducted a vehicle stop and subsequently discovered the items, which officials said were illegally possessed.
Garay was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on seven felony charges, SCSO said. Authorities did not immediately release additional details about the specific charges.
The Gang Suppression Unit, which carried out the arrest, focuses on identifying violent offenders, removing illegal firearms from the streets and targeting gang-related activity, the sheriff’s office said.
Officials noted the unit is among the last full-time gang enforcement teams operating in California.
However, the sheriff’s office stated that, under proposed county budget cuts, the unit could be eliminated — a move authorities said would have an immediate impact on public safety by reducing resources dedicated to addressing violent crime in local communities.
