Historical Native American remains discovered at campus construction site | Campus

Historical Native American remains were found at a construction site on campus Wednesday, said campus spokesperson Janet Gilmore in a statement.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office found that the remains were not connected to any crime, Gilmore wrote in the statement.

Gilmore said UC Berkeley’s Governmental and Community Relations office is coordinating with the California Native American Heritage Commission and noted that campus will follow procedures designated by the commission “to ensure respectful and appropriate next steps.”

Both the Alameda County Coroner’s Office and the California Native American Heritage Commission have not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

The Berkeley Scanner first reported the discovery of the remains at the construction of the beach volleyball courts on the west side of campus.

According to the California Native American Heritage Commission’s most likely descendant procedures, the coroner’s office will notify the individuals that it believes most likely descended from the deceased person.

Then, with permission of the owner of the land, the descendants can inspect the site where the discovery was made, and make recommendations for the treatment of the remains.
