WLANUT, Calif. — Elizabeth Bailey kicked off the Commodores’ West Coast swing by competing in javelin Thursday evening, the first of two entries at two meets this week.

The graduate student, chasing her own school record of 51.38 meters set earlier this season at the Hampton Inn River City Relays, got off to a good start in the event, sitting in sixth place after a 44.87-meter throw. She improved on her second attempt, adding nearly a meter to her distance, recording 45.55 meters. Bailey would get passed as the third round of throws came to an end and would settle for 11th.

Vanderbilt continues its California competition with events at the Bryan Clay Invitational beginning Friday at 6:17 p.m. CT.
