Witnesses to chase and shooting in the California neighborhood see baby rescued from car

Neighbors near the intersection of 22nd Street and Garland Avenue said they were enjoying the weather, Thursday evening when they saw a red car come flying by.

The neighbors and witnesses did not want their names to be used.

“Like I said, just sitting here and all of a sudden, I see a red car go by, almost hit another vehicle that was going down Garland,” one person said. “The red car then proceeded to hit that poll laying over there. [The poll] flipped, ended up still attached to the line. Then the car ended up, I think, in the back yard of this empty house…Then I heard police coming up the street, so I’m figuring it had to have been a chase.”

A WHAS11 crew witnessed the red Ford Fusion car be towed away from where it stopped and an LG&E worker came by soon after to check the line on the pole.

LMPD said the incident started with a reported robbery at 10th Street and West Broadway at around 5 p.m.

“A description of the subject’s vehicle was put out over the radio and our officers located that vehicle a short time later,” said Major Jospeh Nett with LMPD’s First Division. “A vehicle pursuit was initiated. That vehicle came to a final rest at 22nd and Garland. At that time, the subject inside the vehicle barricaded himself, armed with a firearm.”

Major Nett said the man shot himself, and the man was taken to the hospital.

Two eyewitnesses told WHAS11 they saw a baby being rescued. One said the child couldn’t have been more than one year old.

“I couldn’t tell if it was a boy or girl, but it still had Pampers on and it must’ve been in a car seat because I watched them come out with a car seat,” one said.

One told WHAS11 they saw officers take the child to the ambulance to be checked on.

“From what I could tell, the baby was fine,” they said. “I didn’t see anything unusual. It wasn’t crying, just probably more shocked if anything…Hopefully the baby is fine.”

WHAS11 reached out to LMPD about the baby in the car and if the car had been stolen. A spokesperson told us there will not be any new information released at this time.
