Starting April 17, officers will target high-incident areas in Venice, Hollywood, and South L.A.
Local law enforcement will ramp up enforcement against impaired driving this weekend with a series of checkpoints across the city, the Los Angeles Police Department announced.
Beginning Friday evening, officers will monitor high-traffic corridors to identify drivers under the influence of alcohol, prescription drugs, or marijuana. Department officials selected the specific enforcement sites based on historical data regarding DUI-related arrests and traffic collisions.
The checkpoints are scheduled to operate from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the following intersections:
Friday, April 17:Â Lincoln Boulevard and Maxella Avenue.
Saturday, April 18:Â Century Boulevard and Western Avenue.
Saturday, April 18:Â Sunset Boulevard and Coronado Street.
Sunday, April 19:Â Manchester Avenue and Avalon Boulevard.
The LAPD emphasized that recreational and medicinal marijuana use, while legal, remains a criminal offense if a driver is impaired behind the wheel. First-time DUI offenders in California face an average of $13,500 in total costs, including fines, penalties, and legal fees, alongside a mandatory driver’s license suspension.
Officials stated the primary goal of the checkpoints is education and the removal of dangerous drivers to reduce roadway fatalities. These operations are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Locations remain subject to change or cancellation based on operational needs or weather conditions.
