HOOVER, Ala. (WBRC) – A California man is facing felony charges in Shelby County after Hoover police say he targeted an elderly victim in an alleged financial exploitation scheme that involved a demand for $135,000 in cash.

Court records show Harpreet Singh, 25, is charged with attempted financial exploitation of an elderly person and conspiracy to financially exploit an elderly person. In the criminal complaints, an investigator wrote that Singh met with the victim on April 14 “with the intent to collect $135,000,” and that the victim believed if he didn’t cooperate, he would be arrested.
Singh also faces a separate felony charge of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, with the complaint alleging officers found Singh with methamphetamine/amphetamine when they arrested him on Highway 280.
