Two popular breweries — Monkish Brewing Co. and Everywhere Beer — are expanding their presence in Southern California with new Los Angeles taprooms. Torrance-based Monkish’s outpost along Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park is now open, while a new location for Everywhere will debut in the former Fred Harvey space at Union Station this summer.
Sour beer specialist Monkish first opened its doors in 2012 in Torrance with a brewery and tasting room. Over the last decade-plus, Monkish has expanded with a brewery and beer garden in Anaheim and, most recently, a pint-sized tasting room in Echo Park. The Echo Park location offers more than a dozen beers on tap, including West Coast IPAs, American pilsners, and saisons. Cans of beer like the Song of Silence, a “Belgian-ish” blonde ale, and Taste Bud, a triple IPA, are also available to-go. Both indoor and outdoor seating are available.
Everywhere comes from Daniel Muñoz, Jeremy Grinkey, Stefan Weber, and Keith Pumilia, a team of beer industry veterans who previously worked at the Bruery. The brewery currently operates California taprooms in Orange and Long Beach, and a third outpost in Portland, Oregon. Everwhere’s lineup of beers spans the gamut of styles, with a focus on IPAs: an easy-drinking kölsch, a triple dry-hopped hazy IPA, and a German-style helles lager, commonly appear on taproom menus. Everywhere is targeting a May or June opening.
Monkish and Everywhere join Los Angeles’s already deep collection of taprooms, including Highland Park Brewery and Homage Brewing in Chinatown and Boomtown Brewery on the edge of Little Tokyo and the Arts District. The new taprooms arrive in Los Angeles amid existential struggle in the wider craft brewing scene. Over the past few years, a number of small-batch producers have shuttered amid changing drinking habits and a diminished interest in craft breweries.
