A San Diego police officer shot and injured a woman in the East Village on Wednesday after she allegedly stabbed a man and moved toward officers with an object in her hand, according to sheriff’s investigators.
The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. near the intersection of 16th Street and Island Avenue. Police were called to the area by witnesses who reported a woman was actively stabbing a man.
Officers arrived within minutes and issued commands for the woman to drop the object she was holding, sheriff’s Lt. Juan Marquez said in a statement. The woman “advanced toward the officers” and ignored additional commands to drop what she was carrying.
Police have not specified what the object was.
A police officer fired multiple rounds, striking the woman, who was also Tased during the incident, Marquez said. Officers provided medical care, and she was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening, Marquez said.

She will be booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats, he said.
The victim of the assault did not sustain injuries. No officers were hurt.
Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating the shooting under the terms of a countywide agreement that says agencies will not investigate shootings involving their own officers.
