Overview: La Mesa Police Officer Lauren Craven

Craven was struck by a vehicle driven by 38-year-old La Mesa resident Antonio Alcantar. He was later arrested for suspicion of DUI.

Services were underway Tuesday morning for La Mesa Police Department officer Lauren Craven, who was killed in a car crash early last week.

The 25-year-old was killed last Monday evening while at the scene of a multiple-vehicle accident on the eastbound Interstate 8 near Fairmont Avenue. 

Craven was struck by a vehicle driven by 38-year-old La Mesa resident Antonio Alcantar. He was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

19-year-old De’Veonte Morris was also killed at the scene. It was reportedly also the third anniversary of his father’s death.

Morris was one of two drivers initially involved in an accident that Craven stopped for.

She was going to render assistance to the victims of the accident when she was struck while outside of her police cruiser.

Two more vehicles were involved in the accident scene after Craven was struck.

Craven joined the La Mesa Police Department in 2024.
