BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — More changes may be coming to locations and city properties in Delano that depict Cesar Chavez in their names or art.
On Monday, the Delano City Council is slated to discuss and provide direction on city properties, monuments and streets that portray Chavez’s name or image.

The discussion was added to the agenda following Councilman Bryan Osorio’s request made at the previous City Council meeting. Osorio asked to bring this matter to the next meeting to launch the public process of renaming Cesar Chavez Park.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m. at the Delano City Hall at 1015 11th Ave.
City staff is recommending the following changes, according to the City Council meeting agenda.
Cesar Chavez Park
Cesar Chavez Park at 915 Ellington St. could be renamed Ellington Park.
According to city officials, records show the property previously had a park that was referred to as Ellington Street Park before the city became the new owner of that property.
City staff is suggesting the City Council rescind its decision made in 1993 to rename the park to Cesar Chavez Park.
Cesar Chavez Lane
The name “Cesar Chavez Lane” was approved by the City Council in 1994.
The name wouldn’t change dramatically — just take out “Chavez” and change the name to “Chavez Lane,” city staff said.
This is to minimize disruption for the residents who live on the street, the agenda read.

Ellington Community Center Mural
The mural at the Ellington Community Center was part of a 2009 project in which the city worked on a community-built playground project, according to the agenda.
The mural, projected on a wall, portrays several Delano residents who contributed to the mural.
City staff is recommending the mural be painted over and look for grant opportunities to replace it with a new grant-funded arts project, the agenda said.

Downtown Breezeway Mural (Main Street)
Delano artist Carlo L. De Guzman painted the mural at the Delano Downtown Breezeway project through a commission, according to city officials.
“Due to various reasons, in modifying a piece of artwork, there are issues that prohibit anyone else other than the artist themselves from making such modifications on their artwork,” the agenda read.
City staff is asking the City Council to approve reaching out to the artist and ask him to modify his art, which includes removing Chavez’s face.
