Re “MTS, NTCD vote to raise transit fares” (April 17): The problem with the MTS losing money is because of poor management, not the numbers of riders at any given time on the buses! I have observed at various times during the day in the Clairemont area — Balboa Avenue, Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Clairemont Drive — large 49-passenger buses with only one to three passengers. If the MTS has people on staff who analyze routes and ridership, then why hasn’t it used smaller buses during the low-ridership periods? I am sure it costs far less to operate a passenger bus with 15 to 20 seats than those large ones with the same one to three passengers! Can or would someone explain this?
