SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Shoppers across California—including in San Diego County—can expect changes at many of their local Walmart stores this year as the company announced this week plans to rollout a major statewide remodeling plan in an effort to upgrade convenience and improve the overall shopping experience.

The retail giant said it will remodel 56 stores in the Golden State in 2026, with upgrades focused on improving store layouts, expanding product options, as well as enhancing both in-store and online shopping.

Company officials say the improvements aim to make shopping faster, with features like upgraded technology and expanded services. This includes same-day delivery options that can reach customers in as little as an hour.

The announcement is part of a larger national effort, with Walmart planning to remodel more that 650 stores across the country this year. Over the past five years, the company says it has already invested more than $1.1 billion into upgrading its California locations.

“We’re continuing to invest in California with a focus on how we can better serve communities across the state,” said Jay Cordray, senior vice president of Walmart’s West Business Unit.

In addition to store upgrades, Walmart also plans to expand services such as pharmacy delivery for Walmart+ members, update Vision Centers, and enhance mobile app features designed to help customers navigate stores and even book services at Walmart’s Auto Care Center.

Beyond retail improvements, the company also pointed to community impact. Alongside the Walmart Foundation, the company says it has donated more than $84 million to California nonprofits over the past year, including the distribution of nearly 39 million pounds of food to combat hunger.

Walmart has also launched its annual “Fight hunger, Spark Change” campaign, which supports local food banks through donations and qualifying purchases.

Each remodel project is expected to bring both short-term construction jobs and long-term employment opportunities in retail, pharmacy and store managment.

Walmart says the renovations will roll out in phases throughout the year, though timelines may vary depending on construction schedules.

“By modernizing our stores, we’re making everyday shopping more convenient and creating a more connected experience, while empowering our associates to better support the evolving needs of our customers,” Cordray added.
