San Diego cousins both win fights in front of 5K fans at Frontwave Arena

San Diego cousins Julius Ballo and Jonny Mansour both won their fights as part of Saturday’s “SD Fight Night: Family Business” card at Oceanside’s Frontwave Arena, remaining undefeated in their respective pro careers.

Ball improved to 3-0 with a unanimous super-featherweight victory over Santa Ana’s Roman Reyes (6-2). Ballo won 60-54 on all three scorecards.

“I took this fight minute-by-minute, punch by punch,” said Ballo. “This is only my third professional fight, but as the fight went on, I felt more and more comfortable. I thank my coaches for the brilliant game plan. Reyes had a lot of experience, but I studied so hard for this fight. Everything in the ring comes naturally to me. I was born for this; I know boxing is my purpose.”

Mansour, Ballo’s cousin and a fellow product of El Cajon’s Bomber Squad Academy, improved to 7-0 with an eight-round unanimous decision over Perris’ William King (6-4-2).  All three judges gave Mansour an 80-72 victory on their scorecards in the lightweight fight.

Mansour said it was “a blessing” to share the card with his cousin.

“San Diego doesn’t have a world champion,” he said. “Imagine if ‘JuJu’ and I became world champions on the same night.”

In other fights:

• Daniel Morales (9-0, 5 KOs) beat Tijuana’s Alejandro Quintana (7-1-1, 5 KOs) by unanimous decision in an eight-round welterweight bout.

• Oceanside’s Angel Munoz (9-2, 5 KOs) beat Mexico’s Cruz Becerra (3-2, 1 KO) by unanimous decision in a six-round super welterweight bout.

• Pedro Angel Cruz (6-6, 4 KOs) knocked out San Diego’s Angel Estrada (12-2-1, 9 KOs) in the first round of their super-lightweight bout. It was Estrada’s first loss since 2011.

• San Diego’s Richard Fernandez Jr. (5-0, 3 KOs) beat Sugary Montales (6-3, 4 KOs) by unanimous decision after the two fought six rounds in their super-bantamweight bout.

• Oceanside’s Kyle Erwin (11-3, 5 KOs) beat Phoenix’s Jose Marruffo (15-20-2, 2 KOs) with a fight-round knockout in their welterweight bout.

• Chula Vista’s John Ornelas (6-2-1, 3 KOs) won his fight with a first-round TKO, while San Diego’s Angel de la Cruz Ramirez and Vista’s Franklin Garcis (2-0, 2 KOs) won their fights by knockout.

More than 5,000 fans attended the fight, the first major boxing card at the new Oceanside arena.

“It was a great feeling,” Ballo said, “to see 5,000 fans in attendance.”
