(FOX40.COM) — West Sacramento’s largest park is getting a major facelift. Last month, West Sacramento City Council approved a $48 million construction contract to transform Bryte Park.

It’s located along Todhunter Road, right next to two Washington Unified schools. Many residents told FOX40 they weren’t aware of this major change, so our team went to the site to learn more about the stories hidden in this community space.

For Lina Wiltz and her husband, Bryte Park is a treasure trove of memories.

“Actually, I grew up in West Sacramento, so, my husband and I used to just play sports here,” Wiltz said. “I used to play softball on the fields. To see it’s still green and the trees are much bigger now because we’re older — it’s changed a lot.”

And it’s about to change even more. Last month, West Sacramento City Council approved a $48 million construction contract transforming these 24.5 acres at the city’s largest park into something even bigger.

Kimberly Williams tells FOX40 it’s been 20 years since she’s seen this sentimental space in the northern part of West Sacramento. Her brother Adrian agreed that time may pass, but the memories are here to stay.

“We grew up literally right around the corner, “Adrian said. “I went to Golden State when it was Golden State before it became River City. People in this area deserve something like this.”

This update has been years in the making. Back in 2013, the city adopted the Bryte Park Master Plan, so anticipation has been building.

Now, with funding approved and the Washington Unified School District supporting the agreement with the city, it’s almost time to unlock Bryte Park’s next chapter.

“Growing up there was often a difference between what was happening on the right side versus on the West Sac side in those days and a lot of times West Sacramento was often left out of things,” Kimberly said. “So to have attention paid, having this park become something that is going to make the community proud, I think it’s going to be a wonderful opportunity.”

The update will bring lighted tennis courts and softball fields, new baseball and softball fields, a community pool, a dog park, a splash pad, and more. Angela Williams is a teacher, so she says giving the kids in this community more to enjoy is priceless.

She was at Bryte Park Saturday, celebrating her grandson’s first birthday. It’s the same space she celebrated her daughter’s first birthday. As her family continues to grow, she said she’s thrilled to see west Sacramento opportunities growing too.

“We just always say West Sac is the best Sac and so it’s kind of nice to be able to say that there’s a possibility that West Sac is going to be the best Sac,” Angela said.

For those who want one last slide at the park as you know it, there is still a little bit of time. Construction is set to begin this summer.
