A Shelby Township woman who police described as a squatter has been sentenced for a drug-related crime in Oakland County.
Miranda Laight, 38, was sentenced to 53 days in prison with 53 days credited for time served for possession of a controlled substance under 25 grams, and one year probation. The probation requirements include no alcohol use, and submitting to alcohol and drug testing as determined by her probation officer. Oakland County Circuit Judge David Cohen handed down the sentence Monday.
Laight pleaded guilty to the charge in February. She was arrested Jan. 4 in Troy after police reportedly found her and a Troy man, Devin Bushue, asleep in the basement of an apartment building on South Lovington Drive. Officers discovered the two while responding to a trespassing complaint, and after waking them up spotted suspected methamphetamine and a used syringe near where they had been sleeping, police said.
After Laight and Bushue were taken into custody, officers searched their belongings and reportedly found a small Ziploc baggie containing methamphetamine in Bushue’s bag and a syringe containing heroin in Laight’s bag.
Bushue was sentenced in March to time served — 57 days — after pleading guilty to using a controlled substance. Prosecutors dismissed the original charge against him, possession of a controlled substance-methamphetamine/ecstasy.
