A 38-year-old Northern California woman died Sunday morning after a shooting in rural Mendocino County, where authorities say investigators are now working to determine what happened.
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were contacted at about 6:13 a.m. after receiving word that a person was driving a possible gunshot victim to find help in Covelo, an unincorporated community in the northeastern part of the county.
According to the sheriff’s office, the woman had been shot on a dirt road near Covelo and was driven by a citizen to the Covelo Volunteer Fire Department, which was not staffed with emergency medical personnel at the time. She was then taken to a nearby address, where deputies and Round Valley Tribal Police officers started CPR before paramedics arrived.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene at about 6:55 a.m., authorities said.
The sheriff’s office said deputies opened a homicide investigation and called in the agency’s investigations bureau. Detectives have since conducted numerous interviews and served search warrants, but investigators have not released details about a possible suspect or what may have led to the shooting.
“Additional information is not being released at this time to maintain the integrity of the information learned by investigators and law enforcement personnel,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
