More than 100 volunteers are expected to gather at the Oakland Zoo this week to help clean up the watershed along Arroyo Viejo Creek as part of Earth Week efforts focused on climate solutions.
Organizers said the cleanup is aimed at protecting local wildlife, improving water quality and preserving community spaces.
“Cleaning up our creek is incredibly important. Wildlife relies on it. People rely on it in their neighborhoods to walk along the creek and enjoy the trails,” said Nik Dehejia, CEO of the Oakland Zoo. “It’s about having a healthy ecosystem and great drinking water.”
The event is part of a broader push to encourage community involvement in environmental conservation. Officials said residents can also take action on their own by picking up litter, reporting illegal dumping and using tools like the iNaturalist app to track conservation efforts.
“Everyone can take the opportunity to engage with the zoo, but also go out on your own,” Dehejia said. “Walk your creeks, pick up litter and call 311 if there’s illegal dumping so it can be removed.”
Dehejia also highlighted the zoo’s ongoing sustainability work, including efforts to rescue animals and return them to their natural habitats. He said Earth Week serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the environment for future generations.
