The Solana Beach City Council unanimously approved an agreement April 8 with Yunex Inc. for up to $90,000 in the 2026-27 fiscal year to provide streetlight and safety lights maintenance repairs, with up to four one-year extensions.
Out of 801 streetlights in Solana Beach, 274 are owned and cared for by San Diego Gas and Electric, according to a council agenda report. The city is responsible for the rest. Yunex, which already has a contract with the city that expires this June, offered the best balance of “experience, capability, and cost” out of all the proposals received by the city.
“Establishing a new agreement is necessary to ensure continuity of service, maintain operational reliability of the City’s streetlight system,” according to the agenda report, “and provide timely response to maintenance and repair needs. A new agreement will allow the City to continue addressing streetlight outages, damage, and preventative maintenance requirements in a consistent and efficient manner, helping maintain safe roadway and pedestrian lighting conditions throughout the community.”
After issuing a request for proposals in March, the city received bids from Yunex and Bear Electrical Solutions.
“Based on the evaluation, Yunex received the higher overall score, reflecting strong experience, readiness to perform the work, and a clear approach to meeting service and emergency response expectations,” according to the council agenda report. “Staff also reviewed the proposed fee schedules to assess overall value. While there were differences in labor rates, materials and fixture replacements are a major component of the services, and Yunex’s pricing results in a lower overall cost for the anticipated work.”
