San Francisco is trimming the fine for one of the city’s most common parking violations: failure to curb a car’s wheels when parking on a hill.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Board of Directors voted Tuesday to reduce the fine for parking on grades from $73 to $48 as part of its newest budget.

The MTA viewed the violations as not impacting traffic safety.

Drivers in San Francisco must turn their wheels and set the parking brake on any hill with a grade greater than 3%.

Wheels must be turned toward the curb when facing downhill, and away from the curb when facing uphill.

The budget also introduces a new policy to encourage more daily Muni use called fare capping. Under the policy, once a customer pays for two Muni rides on the same day, any additional rides are free.
